College Counseling for Students with Disabilities

While the college search and application process for students with disabilities is largely like the process for their peers, there are key differences that their college counselors must understand to set them up for success. In this course, participants will explore the transition students with disabilities undergo from high school to college. Participants will walk away from this course with a better understanding of how to support their students with disabilities, including how to navigate accommodation options, college costs, applicable laws, and much more.

 

The basics:

  • Intended audience: Secondary counselors and IECs.
  • Format: On-demand.
    • Includes the coinciding chapter from the sixth edition of NACAC’s Fundamentals of College Admission Counseling textbook, three video presentations, and four knowledge checks.
  • Cost: $25 for members, $50 for nonmembers.
    • A 20 percent discount is available for offices of four or more participants registering for the same course.
  • Estimated completion time: 2 hours.
    • Participants have six months to access and complete the course.
  • Upon completion: Continuing education credit hours and a completion certificate.

  

Course objectives:

In this course, you will:

  • Review the transition from high school to college through an adjustment-based theoretical perspective.
  • Identify strategies, tools, and critical questions to utilize when supporting students with disabilities as they navigate the college preparation process.
  • Internalize a staged-based approach to college transition planning for students with complex needs and who may require additional support upon graduating high school.
  • Review the applicable laws that shape college accommodations options.
  • Explain how high school accommodations should be reflected in a student’s college search criteria.
  • Calculate how the cost of college may be increased due to additional fee-based services.
