College Counseling for Students of Color

This course delves into challenges and opportunities in enrolling students of color in American higher education, emphasizing a vital role of K–12 and higher education partnership. From the dual perspectives of secondary and college counselors, participants will explore students’ intersectional identities and review historical enrollment trends, including those of minority serving institutions. Participants will also learn about legal rulings that impact the college admission process and discover strategies for engaging students of color. Finally, participants will be exposed to the significance of financial aid conversations and the role of community partnerships in supporting students of color on their college journey.

 

The basics:

  • Intended audience: Secondary counselors and IECs.
  • Format: On-demand.
    • Includes the coinciding chapter from the sixth edition of NACAC’s Fundamentals of College Admission Counseling textbook, three video presentations, and four knowledge checks.
  • Cost: $25 for members, $50 for nonmembers.
    • A 20 percent discount is available for offices of four or more participants registering for the same course.
  • Estimated completion time: 1.75 hours.
    • Participants have six months to access and complete the course.
  • Upon completion: Continuing education credit hours and a completion certificate.

  

Course objectives:

In this course, you will:

  • Identify the types of minority-serving institutions (MSIs) and how they serve their target populations.
  • Engage key stakeholders to support students of color in the college application process.
  • Recognize the role of culturally responsive counseling.
  • Explore the higher education landscape for students of color, including the impact of recent court cases.
  • Discuss the role of the campus visit for students of color, including fly-in programs.
  • Review the unique characteristics of the college application process for students of color and how to encourage authentic storytelling.
