College Counseling for Students Experiencing Homelessness

This course will cover the prevalence of students experiencing homelessness in schools, the challenges of homelessness on families and youth, the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act, and the role of school counselors and other key educational staff in supporting the college preparation of youth experiencing homelessness. In addition, this course will provide participants with strategies for working with students who are experiencing homelessness and going to college.

 

The basics:

  • Intended audience: Secondary counselors and IECs.
  • Format: On-demand.
    • Includes the coinciding chapter from the sixth edition of NACAC’s Fundamentals of College Admission Counseling textbook, three video presentations, and four knowledge checks.
  • Cost: $25 for members, $50 for nonmembers.
    • A 20 percent discount is available for offices of four or more participants registering for the same course.
  • Estimated completion time: 1.75 hours.
    • Participants have six months to access and complete the course.
  • Upon completion: Continuing education credit hours and a completion certificate.

  • Understand the challenges of students experiencing homelessness.
  • Identify the basic tenets of the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act.
  • Identify strategies to support youth experiencing homelessness go to college.
  • Examine best practices in providing tailored counseling.
  • Assist students in building a system of support.
  • Explore strategies for supporting students’ social/emotional and development needs.
