College Counseling for International Students

This course focuses on international students seeking admission to American universities. Participants will dive into the diverse backgrounds of these applicants and explore the unique challenges they face in navigating the application process from abroad. In addition, this course provides a comprehensive overview of application and visa requirements, while also considering things like standardized testing and financial considerations. Moreover, it offers practical guidance on cultivating resilience and preparing students for the transformative experience of college life abroad. 

 

The basics:

  • Intended audience: Secondary counselors and IECs.
  • Format: On-demand.
    • Includes the coinciding chapter from the sixth edition of NACAC’s Fundamentals of College Admission Counseling textbook, three video presentations, and four knowledge checks.
  • Cost: $25 for members, $50 for nonmembers.
    • A 20 percent discount is available for offices of four or more participants registering for the same course.
  • Estimated completion time: 1.5 hours.
    • Participants have six months to access and complete the course.
  • Upon completion: Continuing education credit hours and a completion certificate.

  

Course objectives:

In this course, you will:

  • Identify the characteristics of the different types of international students and how this impacts their application journey. 
  • Explore the unique challenges faced by international students.
  • Explain the role of finances in the application process including acceptable funding sources and how to prepare a bank letter. 
  • Discuss the unique preparations students need to consider before departure.
  • Identify the characteristics of third culture kids and how their college-going journey compares to their international peers.
  • Consider the options available to international students after college.
