College Counseling for First-Generation College Students

First-generation college students (FGCS) have unique experiences, strengths, and challenges in their college admission journey. In this course, participants will explore how school counselors can support students from a strengths-based perspective by engaging families, leveraging CBOs, celebrating milestones, addressing financial hurdles, and developing targeted programming. 

 

The basics:

  • Intended audience: Secondary counselors and IECs.
  • Format: On-demand.
    • Includes the coinciding chapter from the sixth edition of NACAC’s Fundamentals of College Admission Counseling textbook, three video presentations, and four knowledge checks.
  • Cost: $25 for members, $50 for nonmembers.
    • A 20 percent discount is available for offices of four or more participants registering for the same course.
  • Estimated completion time: 2.25 hours.
    • Participants have six months to access and complete the course.
  • Upon completion: Continuing education credit hours and a completion certificate.

  

Course objectives:

In this course, you will:

  • Apply knowledge of college and career readiness to promote equity in college access for first-generation college students.
  • Analyze how consultation with families, K-12 and postsecondary school personnel, and community agencies benefit and empower first-generation college students.
  • Summarize interventions to promote college and career readiness for first-generation college students.
  • Explore the power of celebrating milestones.
  • Identify strategies for communicating about financial hurdles with students and families.
